For independent shops, great places to eat and a proper seaside feel, Deal makes a brilliant base. Walk the Georgian streets, stop for coffee on the High Street, browse independent boutiques, visit the pier or simply spend the afternoon by the sea.
For something a bit quieter, St Margaret’s Bay is perfect. Tucked beneath the White Cliffs, it’s home to one of the country’s most stunning stretches of coastline. The clifftop path forms part of the Kent Downs National Landscape, with beautiful walks between St Margaret’s Bay, South Foreland Lighthouse and Dover.
If history is your thing, Sandwich offers medieval streets, riverside walks and a fantastic choice of independent cafés and restaurants. It’s also one of England’s best-known golfing destinations, with Royal St George’s Golf Club, host of The Open Championship.
Places to Visit Nearby
Head north to Broadstairs for sandy beaches and traditional seaside charm, or continue to Margate for galleries, vintage shops and a thriving food scene. Ramsgate is perfect for a harbour-side lunch before wandering the Royal Harbour and marina, while Whitstable is always worth the drive for its oysters, independent boutiques and colourful waterfront. If you have time, Canterbury, Dover and the White Cliffs are all within easy reach too!
Spending a Few Days in Kent
One of the hardest parts of a weekend in Kent is deciding what to fit in. Start the day with a walk. Follow the clifftop path from St Margaret’s Bay to South Foreland Lighthouse through the Kent Downs National Landscape, or enjoy a gentler stroll along Deal’s seafront before stopping for coffee overlooking the beach.
History is never far away here. Explore the medieval rooms and secret wartime tunnels at Dover Castle, visit the beautiful gardens at Walmer Castle, once home to the Duke of Wellington, or wander the historic streets of Sandwich, one of England’s best-preserved medieval towns.
A weekend on the Kent coast isn’t just about the sea. The county has quietly become one of England’s leading wine regions, with Simpsons Wine Estate near Canterbury offering vineyard tours and tastings overlooking the North Downs. Afterwards, head to Kebbells Seafood Bar in Broadstairs for some of the freshest seafood on the Kent coast, or seek out one of the many farm shops and local producers showcasing Kent’s seasonal ingredients.
If shopping is more your style, browse the independent boutiques in Deal, explore the galleries and vintage shops in Margate, or spend a morning wandering Whitstable’s independent high street before heading out to The Sportsman near Seasalter, the Michelin-starred seafood pub that’s well worth planning ahead for.
